Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex
Dwayne, an adorable 2-year-old Mixed Breed Dog, came to WVRC’s Racine ER for evaluation of a paw wound that was not healing. For the past month Dwayne’s left paw had been swollen and irritated and the tissue was red, sloughing, and bleeding. He had seen his family veterinarian and was on an antibiotic, his foot was bandaged, and he was wearing an e-collar, but nothing was helping his paw heal.
Dr. Karch did a full exam and X-rays were taken, but there were no signs of boney lesions or fractures that may have caused the problem. Next a biopsy of the tissue was taken to help determine the cause of the wound. The tests showed something called eosinophilic granuloma complex with a secondary infection thought to be due to an allergic reaction, most likely from an insect or spider bite.
Dwayne continued on the antibiotic and was also given a steroid to clear up his wound. When he came back to have his sutures removed and get a bandage change, his paw was almost completely healed! We are happy that Dwayne’s paw is doing so much better and he can get back to running around and having fun – and more importantly no longer have to wear that cone!
